Providing quality care for your loved one while continuing to accomplish tasks on your to-do list can be a challenging feat. After all, there are only so many hours in the day!

If you are concerned about leaving your aging loved one at home during the day but are not ready for an assisted living community, an adult day service might be a great option.

An adult day service provides the necessary care for your loved ones while immersed in a fun and stimulating environment that has many benefits for them and you. And you get to bring your loved one home. Here we cover the benefits of adult day services and how it might be a good fit for your aging loved one.

Promotes Independence

Adult day service can be a place where older adults can get out of the house and involve themselves with others their age on a social level. Guests have the chance to have control over their schedules & activities, time away from their family, and be in a safe and caring environment the entire time.

Quality Care

Adult day service is more than “daycare.” Your loved one is receiving personal care and assistance, healthy and nutritious meals, medication distribution, participating in fun activities, and much more, all while obtaining the best care from trained staff, nurses, and other licensed medical professionals.

Socialization

Socialization for your aging adult is essential, and that’s what an adult day service provides. It allows them to participate in group activities such as shooting pool, doing a jigsaw puzzle & making arts & crafts! These activities are a great way to keep them physically and mentally active – and it’s much better than merely sitting at home!

Physical Recreation

According to Mayo Clinic, “Physical activity is one of the known modifiable risk factors for dementia. Plus, regular exercise helps combat other Alzheimer’s disease risk factors, such as depression and obesity.”

There are quite a few other benefits to your loved one staying physically active:

  • Decreased risk of falls
  • Social engagement
  • Improved cognitive function
  • Decreased cardiovascular mortality
  • Promotes sleep

Provide Respite to Caregivers

Caregiving requires a lot of time and energy to make sure your loved one receives adequate care. It can be a full-time job with a high probability of burnout. Adult day service will allow you to focus on your health and lower your stress levels while you continue to provide quality care for your aging adult. In addition, this service will give you a chance to rest and spend higher quality time together after taking those much-needed/deserved breaks!

When Is The Right Time for Adult Day Services?

Whether you are a caregiver on the verge of burnout or an aging adult with a need to get out of the house, the ideal time to start searching for an adult day service is before it’s needed. We understand that isn’t always a realistic situation, so we have compiled a small list of signs to determine if an adult day service is the right move for you:

  • Loved one cannot be left at home alone
  • Feels isolated
  • Looking for companionship/friendship
  • Is unable to organize or structure a daily schedule
