The Cottages at Hillcrest Country Estates are the first and only freestanding nursing households in Nebraska and are a national model for “culture change” in long-term care facilities. Each of our eight Cottages is home to 13 “Elders” (Residents) who benefit from 24-hour nursing care services.
Unlike traditional nursing homes with long corridors and rigid schedules, our Elders are welcome to enjoy the schedule they’ve always known, in a beautifully-designed house that is the polar opposite of institutional. Whether your loved one enjoys waking early or late, a Cottage homemaker is prepared to custom-make his or her favorite breakfast. And what’s on the menu? Anything the Elder wants, since we stock the kitchen with all of the Elders’ favorite foods, and our Registered Dietitian ensures proper nutrition to meet the requirements of each Elder’s care plan. Lunch, dinner, snacks and scrumptious baked goods are all prepared right in the cottage by the Homemakers (who are also Elder Assistants), and big meals are served family style, with team members often joining their Elders at the dining table.
The care teams have adopted a universal worker approach, which means the same team members complete almost all of the tasks in their assigned Cottage, giving them more time to build solid family-like relationships with the Elders. A Cottage Guide oversees the daily operations of two Cottages, and assists with activities, outings, family concerns and social work issues. The Elder Assistants, with support from licensed and registered nurses, provide direct care, while also handling cooking, cleaning and social activities, and they participate regularly with family members in Quality Circles.
Each Cottage is over 14,000 square feet (see floor plan) and features an open kitchen, family-style dining area, large living room with hearth fireplace, large TV and player piano, a library with “Kids’ Corner” full of toys and games, hair salon, whirlpool bath suite, laundry room, and comfortable patios for visiting, relaxing and family grilling in warmer weather.
