Ethical Decision-Making: When Families Take the Wheel

Complimentary LUNCH and Presentation

Presented by Jea Theis, LIMHP, LCSW

Jea Theis

In the healthcare field, tension often exists between best care practices and the individual’s right to self-determination. This tension is perhaps never more present than in the realm of eldercare. This workshop introduces participants to an ethical decision-making model, and encourages participants  to consider their own ethical decision-making styles. Participants will have an opportunity to apply ethical decision-making strategies to everyday healthcare and lifestyle choices in their work with patients and families.

Learning Objectives:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the myths and stereotypes related to older people and “ageism.”
2. Describe age-related ethical issues, including advance directives, decision-making capacity, level of care needs and end-of-life care.
3. Utilize an ethical model to process age-related ethical dilemmas.

Jea Theis, LIMHP, LCSW is a licensed independent mental health professional and clinical social worker. She has worked with individuals and families recovering from loss, abuse, and trauma, and has specific training in trauma-focused and cognitive-behavioral therapies, EMDR, and compassion fatigue. Jea spent three years as a grief and loss counselor with Hillcrest, and now works in private practice providing therapy to individuals and families working through trauma, grief and loss throughout the lifespan.
